Luck of the Photographer...

I had the pleasure of photographing a family session with the Harris family on St. Patrick's Day.  My clients chose The Hague in Norfolk because it was a special place for them.  When the couple had their engagement photos done, this is where they came.  It was something special for me to photograph this lovely family of three in a place that held such a special spot in their hearts.

The day was not what you would think an ideal photo shoot would be.  It was cloudy and overcast with absolutely no sun shining.  For me, this is one of my favorite kind of days to shoot.  There is little to no need for a flash and the images seem to come out softer and the clients really stand out against the background.  This day was a little chilly to begin with at the start of our session.  I took photos for about 20 minutes before we had to take a break and warm up in the car with a snack for the little one.

I loved the variety of scenery in this session.  The Hague is a great place with the bridge over the River, the urban park like setting, and the stone work around the river.

The next time you see a cloudy overcast day, don't knock it.  It could be the day when you shoot your most favorite photo.  I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I do!

Family shoot at Red Wing Park...

Hello friends!  It is December isn't it?  Well, with these 60+ degree days, I am loving the chance to soak up all the warm weather before we hide away into our warm homes.  One of my favorite things to do on a beautiful, warm day is to go out and take some pictures.  I just happened to have a family session booked during our warm weekend and I was able to capture some beautiful and silly moments of some great kids (mom & dad too of course).

We took advantage of the beautiful fallen leaves at Red Wing Park.  It's one of my favorite places to go for photo sessions because of the different choices of backdrops.  If you've never been to Red Wing, I recommend that you go when you have the chance!  There's a beautiful stone courtyard, a Japanese garden, and trails with wooden bridges.  You simply can't go wrong in choosing this location.

I was excited to unveil the finished photos to this great family and was delighted to see their excitement in viewing these photos.  I can't tell people enough how much I love my job.  The squeals and oohs and ahh's are so gratifying to hear.  When I see how much my clients love my work I know I've done my job.

I hope you enjoy my work as much as my clients did!

B&W or color?

When you photograph people in colour you photograph their clothes.  But when you photograph people in B&W, you photograph their souls!  ~Ted Grant

I have always loved B&W photos.  There's something about them that draws me in and makes a connection with me.  I love this quote because I think it really captures the essence of what B&W photographs are supposed to do.  Here are a few of my own B&W photographs and I really think they evoke emotion and tell a story.

at the Pagoda

I had the pleasure of photographing a lovely family this afternoon at Norfolk's Pagoda Garden.  If you haven't been there before, it needs to go on your list of places to visit in Hampton Roads.  It's tucked away in a secret spot that's quiet and serene.  The garden is also close to the water and the view at sunset is breath taking.

The Walden's had their engagement photos done at the Pagoda a few years ago and wanted to return with their daughter.  We had a great time and took lots of photos, which means lots of work for me.  I love that you can tell how much they love each other by the way they interact in front of the camera.  I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I do.  Most importantly, I hope the Walden's love my work.
